The essential of air ventilation

Air, the basic need of life. As much as it is taken for granted, air quality is the most crucial element when it comes to living. If you doubt the statement one bit, stop breathing for a while. Just as important it is for our environment to stay clean, it is equally important that the air stays breathable and germ free.

The need of ventilation

Ventilation is instrumental in maintaining the property. You will be surprised to know but there are more elements that contribute to heat buildup than just your kitchen stove. Property management Singapore have the detailed answers to queries regarding air conditioning and ventilation of properties. Before we move to further discussion with ventilation, let’s see what these elements are:

  • The heat from sun directly entering our house is a major contributor to rise in temperature inside the house.
  •  Hot air from the surroundings that make way through our windows and doors is another ingredient.

These elements may not be considered when we discuss the rise in temperature inside our house. For us, an exhaust fan is important in the kitchen because it takes out the heat and smoke through the vent. However, the heat buildup continues in other parts of your property which generally go unnoticed.

The working principle

The principle of ventilation is quite simple. Just like you make way for water to travel through pipes, ventilation is the circulation of air in and out of the house. If you provide air with free passage, you will never be faced with complaints such as suffocation and high temperature inside your house.

How to implement ventilation inside the property

There are several ventilation systems available these days which ensure effective air passage so that your home temperature stays normal all the time.

  • Exhaust fans

One of the simple types of ventilation systems are exhaust fans. These fans suck out the hot air that builds up inside closed environments. Exhaust fans are cheap and easy to install inside rooms and we recommend that every room should have at least one exhaust fan.

  • Keep windows open

The best way to allow air to pass is simply to give it a passage. If you keep the windows and doors opened frequently, there will be no heat buildup inside your rooms. Also, it will allow cleaner and fresher air to enter your house so the environment stays healthier.

  • Tree plantation

If you have trees around your house, ventilation can improve considerably. Trees are a good source of ventilation as well as they clean the air. You must have experienced cleaner and cooler breeze when you stand under a tree. So you can plant more trees around your property for a healthier breeze to pass through your house all the time. But be mindful of excess pool of water around your plantation to avoid dengue breakout.

What else to consider

If you are going for modern ventilating systems, make sure that you have identified the air volume in your house and the ventilator capacity. Property management can provide you with detailed guidance in regards to calculations when you install a ventilation system.

3 Steps to Prevent Dengue from Your Facility

Health and safety of the tenants is of high importance. Apart from managing the property and providing smooth supply of resources, the facilities and property management also has to ensure protection against viruses and bacteria. Recently, there has been an update pointing towards a possible outbreak of dengue virus in Singapore. As one of the roles of facilities managers, this is a crucial issue that needs to be addressed.

Not too long ago, NEA (National Environmental Agency) Singapore urged public and stakeholders to play their role in controlling Dengue virus in the region. Media releases have confirmed that there has been an increase in the population of Aedes mosquitos and it will continue to rise in warmer weather.

According to the environmental agency, warmer weather is ideal for faster breeding of mosquitos, as well as maturation cycle. It also shortens incubation period for the virus. It also added that DENV-2 serotype has been the cause of more than half of the dengue cases reported in the previous year which is a big change. Earlier, since 2013, DENV-1 serotype was the cause of most dengue cases.

NEA further commented that this change is an early indication of the potential of the virus to spread in Singapore, unless strict measures are being adopted to reduce the population of Aedes mosquitos.

According to city-state reports and NEA:

  • 2013 was the year with record-breaking 22,000 dengue cases and 7 deaths.
  • During 2014, 18,342 cases were reported and there were 5 deaths as well.
  •  In 2015 however, situation was kept under control through strict controlling measures. Until June 2015, there were 4,292 cases which were 45% less than previous year.

With this being reported, experts are concerned about the steep increase in the population of Aedes mosquitos which has doubled since 2014. NEA urged all stake holders to make sure their premises remain free from stagnant water as it has been the major factor in the growth of Aedes mosquitos and dengue cases.

Measures to prevent dengue fever:

1. Know where the breeding takes place

You cannot easily identify the actual breeding spots. So, it is better to spray insecticides and mosquito-killers on the following places:

  • Containers
  • Flower trays and pots with water
  • Ornamental containers
  • Toiler bowl and Cistren
  •  Plants

2. Five steps mosquito wipe out

Due to the anticipation of rise in dengue cases, NEA advices public to take necessary preventive measures to reduce threats of dengue in the regions. Preventive measures include:

  • The water in bowls and vases must be changed every alternate day.
  • The water in the flower pot plates must be removed and refilled on alternate days.
  • All water storage containers must be turned over.
  •  If you have bamboo pole holders, cover them when they’re not in use.
  • Make sure there should be no blockages. Roof gutters must be fumigated with BTI insecticides on monthly basis

3. Apply Repellent

Furthermore, if it has been confirmed that anyone suffers from dengue fever, use mosquito repellent to keep away from mosquito bites. Dengue fever can be transmitted from infected person to a normal person via ordinary mosquito. For public places and workplaces, use mosquito repellents for extra protection.
